duck soup

My friend Derek owns a house on the beach in Peranporth, Cornwall. You can walk directly from the door, past Cathedral Rock, into the surf. This weekend there were a houseful of guests, they came from all over, a congregation to enjoy some company, a few drinks, a little surfing and some general dolittle. And I fell in love.

I think we all did. With Georgia.

Georgia is a smile, a turned up nose and gentle freckles, a shock of blond hair and a guileless, simple charisma that melts the heart. “Pass me the…” she’d say “Can I have a…”, and we’d feel pleased to be asked. “Pick me up” she said, and I put her down, eventually, three days later. Georgia is four years old.

It’s strange what keys exist, what doors open to unexpected draughts, what negligible force it takes to persuade.

I managed to broker a deal this week, the best deal I’ve ever done, and I’m renowned for waking in the morning surrounded by the slops of the previous night with a signature in my hand.

This one is for me though. I handed in my resignation, a year’s notice - more than enough time for them to find someone to take my place, and plenty of time for me to galvanise myself, or rather us, to travel. To go look, and find out.

(ps Any suggestions on where might be a good place to spend New Year in the States?)

will the boys go with you? I'm so not brave when it comes to such huge decisions. So not brave.

You are my hero!

New Year's Eve - it must be New York City. Or maybe South Beach? ;)

Good for you Colin! Good for you. Follow your hearts desire and New York is SO over-rated (or so I hear) venture down to the Carolinas :)

New York's great, but barely warmer than my neck of the woods...what about Santa Monica?

I've never heard of giving a year's notice, you must be V. V. important, Cols.

And of course the boys stay with you or there's hell to pay with several of us here...I suspect we don't need to worry though.

I'm so excited for you babe! This is something that you've dreamed of.

BTW, Georgia sounds like a true bit of heaven... Something about that age is so pure and so able to be nothing but honest... *grin*

I'd say Houston for New Years because we've got a spectacular display... I know you abhore the heat though.

Perhaps Key West, FL? Vale, CO? NYC would be fun per se but I think if I wanted to "party" I'd rather be in Vegas for New Years.

Yeah - take a quick flight to Montreal in Canada, and you will get a bit of the European flair with the Canuck kindness - and word on the street is that Montreal has plenty of beautiful woman, most who speak at least two languages and you can not only experience a great city but a great culture which is so different from Canada, yet ultimately the same.
